European digital camps for the inclusion of youth with retinoblastoma

Children and young people affected by severe illnesses must spend long periods in hospitals or at home. These are difficult times, away from their friends and the routine that gives them life, so they often fall into depression, thus creating new barriers to their socialization, inclusion, and even their recovery.

For 24 months we will carry out activities to implement the results of this project, thus providing opportunities for Young people with retinoblastoma or other childhood cancers to recover their smile in their most difficult times. These will include holding the first DIGITAL, INCLUSIVE, AND TRANSNATIONAL CAMP, Transnational Meetings, and adapted activities for the creation of results, of training, evaluation, and monitoring, as well as dissemination activities.

A methodology of digital, transnational, and inclusive camps will be created, which will allow children and young people with disabling diseases to access to safe and adapted leisure activities and non-formal training that enhances their youth vàlues and skills. This strategy will include:

The first transnational meeting of the European project that we lead called ‘EUROPEAN DIGITAL CAMPS FOR THE INCLUSION OF YOUTH WITH RETINOBLASTOMA: spaces for digital and social construction of youth with retinoblastoma in Europe’ took place on 22nd November. A project included in the Erasmus+ programme and co-financed by the European Union.

The meeting took place in the facilities of the Rovira y Virgili University of Tarragona, which kindly lends us its spaces. The meeting was attended by 2 representatives of ZAvod Botter (Slovenia), 1 representative of Artistas du Monde (Belgium), 1 representative of Small Codes (Italy), 1 representative of Intress (Barcelona), 2 representatives of Redtree (Valencia) and 2 representatives of La Nineta dels Ulls Foundation.

The meeting began with the presentation of the different entities to promote knowledge between us. Then the project and its planning were presented, and we ended up defining the role and tasks of each entity in the project.

The meeting ended with a lunch for all the representatives, and we agreed to meet virtually in the different meetings planned and to meet again in person next October 2024 in Florence.

TNM 2 – Florence (IT) – 04 November 2024

On 4 November 2024, Florence was the venue for the 2nd transnational meeting of the project: ‘EUROPEAN DIGITAL CAMPS FOR THE INCLUSION OF YOUTH WITH RETINOBLASTOMA’, of the Erasmus+ programme.

The meeting was attended by 2 representatives of Zavod Botter (Slovenia), 2 representatives of Artistas du Monde (Belgium), 2 representatives of Smallcodes (Italy), 1 representative of Intress (Barcelona), 2 representatives of Redtree (Valencia) and 1 representative of La Nineta dels Ulls Foundation.

During this meeting we presented the first version of FUNCAMP, our virtual platform, and collected valuable ideas to improve it. We also reviewed the pilot test carried out on 20 October and shared the feedback received.

What a pleasure it was to meet again in person all the partners! We shared ideas, planned next steps and continued to strengthen this very special network for the inclusion of young people with retinoblastoma in Europe.

The meeting ended with a lunch for all the representatives and we agreed to meet virtually on 22 January 2025 and to meet again in person in July 2025 in Brussels.

We would like to thank Smallcodes for their hospitality and fantastic management of the meeting.

TNM 3 – Brussels (Belgium) – 3 July 2025

On 3 July 2025, the third and final transnational meeting of the Erasmus+ project ‘EUROPEAN DIGITAL CAMPS FOR THE INCLUSION OF YOUTH WITH RETINOBLASTOMA’ took place in Brussels.
The meeting was attended by one representative from Zavod Botter (Slovenia), four representatives from Artistes du Monde (Belgium), one representative from Smallcodes (Italy), one representative from Intress (Barcelona), two representatives from Redtree (Valencia) and one representative from the La Nineta dels Ulls Foundation.
The meeting took place at the headquarters of Artistes du Monde for Kids (AMK), in an incredible space and with an atmosphere of great collaboration among all the partners. We would like to thank AMK for the warm welcome and well-done organisation.
During this meeting, we presented the Methodological Guide for Digital Camps, the FUNCAMP Platform and other results generated during the project.
We also planned the next steps to disseminate the results obtained during the project. All the organisations agreed on the good working atmosphere during the project and the interesting and motivating results.
The meeting ended with a meal for all the representatives at AMK, who offered us a very special Mexican menu that they prepared themselves. The relaxed atmosphere allowed us to continue strengthening this network and plan new avenues of European collaboration for the inclusion of young people with retinoblastoma in Europe.
