Fundació La Nineta dels Ulls begins image collection at Maputo General Hospital to validate its mobile app prototype for early retinoblastoma detection (24/03/2026)

Fundació La Nineta dels Ulls has begun a key phase in the development of its health innovation project: the collection of images at Maputo General Hospital in Mozambique, with the aim of validating the prototype of its mobile application designed for the early detection of retinoblastoma.

This project, which combines technology, research, and social impact, seeks to support the early identification of this pediatric eye tumor through the analysis of images captured using mobile devices. The application is based on the detection of signs such as leukocoria (white pupillary reflex), one of the main warning indicators of the disease.

The current phase in Maputo allows the team to test the performance of the model in a real-world setting, collecting data in clinical environments that differ from those in Europe. This step is essential to ensure that the tool is robust, adaptable, and effective in low-resource settings, where early detection can have a particularly significant impact on children’s survival and quality of life.

In addition to technical validation, this phase also helps establish collaborations with local medical teams and strengthens the international scope of the project, consolidating a cooperative model that contributes to advancing the fight against retinoblastoma globally.
