This week, the La Nineta dels Ulls Foundation visited La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital in Valencia to deliver the Nixi Kits from the “Nixi and Retinoblastoma” project, designed to help children face medical procedures with greater confidence and calmness during retinoblastoma treatment.
During the visit, alongside Nagore Folgado and Dr. Julia Balaguer, Associate of the Pediatric Oncohematology Unit, the team toured the pediatric area and explained how the project works. Each family receives a kit including:
-
Access to six informative videos about the disease and common medical procedures.
-
A Nixi therapeutic plush, adapted to the specific needs of treatment, including tools to simulate procedures such as general anesthesia exams.
-
A personalized activity book about retinoblastoma, allowing children to practice MRI procedures and tactile activities to identify retinoblastoma safely and understandably.
These materials help children and their families familiarize themselves with the hospital environment and medical procedures, reducing anxiety and fear.
All content has been developed under the supervision and collaboration of the Child Life team at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, and the project’s integration into different centers treating this disease was made possible thanks to the Retinoblastoma Group of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (SEHOP). This initiative combines learning and play, offering essential emotional and educational support to families.
